How old does my child have to be to sign up ?
There is no pat answer for this one. In general boys are best to start at about five, girls at about four. Having said that it really depends on the child and it is probably best to have your child try a class or two, that way the instructors can evaluate your child's readiness, both of you have a chance to meet the instructors and you have the opportunity to see the dojo first hand.

Can I try a free class ?
Certainly. Just call us or drop in for a visit to arrange for a free class or two.

Can I watch while my child is in class ?
Yes, and take a moment to speak to all the other parents standing around as well. We are quite a social club and have several events throughout the year including Halloween and Christmas parties and our annual summer camping trip.

How does grading work ?
See the New Member Information package on Grading.
If you still have questions please do not hesitate to approach one of the instructors.

Why Jiu Jitsu instead of say Karate ?
The short answer to the question is, "because you will gain the skills and confidence to deal with any opponent regardless of what martial art they practice and you will be able to do this without having to build huge muscles. Let me elaborate a bit.

Jiu Jitsu is known as the "Mother Art:, in other words it is the martial art from which a lot of the other martial arts were derived. For example, Karate developed the striking aspect of Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, developed the kicking aspect, Judo developed the throwing aspects. In addition, Jiu Jitsu advocates using an opponent's strength against them, which means the Jiu Jitsu practitioner does not have to be strong themselves. You will be trained to recognize and counter attacks from practitioners of other martial arts and all without having to worry about how strong they are.

What will I learn if I take Kumo Jiu Jitsu ?
Kumo Jiu Jitsu will teach you how to put your opponent off balance, so that they will be unable to defend from your attack. You will learn how to deflect an incoming attack, to adapt to rapidly changing conditions in a fight situation, how to deal with opponents who are bigger than you are or wearing protective or bulky clothing, how to disarm assailants wielding guns or knives, how to protect yourself from an attack using a bat or stick. Keep in mind the techniques taught in Kumo Jiu Jitsu are similar to those used by police and armed forces around the world.

Can women take Kumo Jiu Jitsu ?
Kumo Jiu Jitsu is ideally suited to women since it does not require a lot or strength to execute the techniques. In addition "softening" techniques are taught which allow the execution of a technique in a situation that would normally require the use of strength.

How many classes can I come to each week ?
This is really up to you. Our dojo is open five days a week and you are welcome to attend class every night if you so desire. For children we usually recommend starting with two days a week, perhaps Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and then if a third class is desired, Fridays are also available.

Do I have to buy any equipment ?
You will need a Gi - uniform. If you already have one from previous martial arts training, you are quite welcome to wear it, however you may find that a heavy gi, such as a judo or grappling gi, is best. Sparring gear - gloves, shin/foot protectors and head gear are also recommended and are mandatory for advanced belt levels.
